usb port security and access control
software
Background:
As technology becomes
increasingly mobile, data leakage and data loss is a real threat to both small
and large companies. From confidential files to sensitive customer information,
every device that accesses an organization’s computer network may increase the
risk of data leakage or data loss. Moreover, not only may the costs of
rectifying data leakage or data loss have high economic impact, but it may also
negatively affect an organization’s reputation. The use of USB drives is of particular
interest when devising a comprehensive data security system; their ubiquitous
use and portability makes USB drives particularly difficult to manage and
secure.
Technology Highlights:
Richard Anselme at The University of Texas Health Science
Center at Houston (UTHealth) has created a USB port security and access control
software (“USB Protect”). This software:
·
May work on any computer with a USB port (Windows XP,
Vista, Windows 7);
·
May control the allowed USB removable media on a
computer;
·
Potentially prevents users from transporting data with
unsecured USB media; and
·
Can be a simple and affordable solution for small
companies.
Market
Potential/Applications
As organizations become
more mobile in their business practice, there becomes a great need for an easy
and cost effective USB port security and access control program. This USB security technology not
only be of value to companies looking to increase their USB security, but may
also be of value for those companies selling encrypted USB media, where this
technology can be used as an added-value item with the purchase of a company’s
current devices.
